Meet Penny! This sweet Basenji mix was originally transferred to us as a young pup in 2018 from the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility. After being adopted, Penny returned to us in July of this year. While initially thought to be a Labrador/Boxer mix, her adult size and markings suggest she's likely a Basenji mix – though identifying breeds can be tricky!
Penny developed anxiety in her previous home, which sadly escalated into fear-based reactivity. She's currently thriving in a foster home with experienced handlers and enjoys the company of 5 dogs and 4 cats. This has shown us that with the right environment and management, she can do very well! Penny forms strong bonds and will deeply attach to her forever family, showering them with love and loyalty. She's affectionate on her own terms, like a cat, and loves gentle cuddles and downtime, but also has a playful, energetic side. She enjoys sprinting, exploring, playing fetch, and is a self-proclaimed track star! Penny prefers to exercise with her trusted people and canine friends, rather than in overstimulating environments like dog parks.
Ideal Home
Penny would do best in a home that is either pet-free or has an experienced owner who can safely manage a multi-dog or multi-animal household. She also needs an adopter experienced with reactive dogs. A home that provides a safe and controlled environment for her to explore and exercise will be ideal, and she needs an adopter who understands and respects her boundaries. She is not looking for mental overstimulation that dog parks provide.
Ongoing Health
No specific health conditions are mentioned, but Penny has a history of anxiety and fear-based reactivity.
Training & Support
Penny is learning to manage her reactivity and can sometimes get carried away during outdoor play. She is receptive to firm guidance and understands when she needs a short timeout indoors. She is very attached to her foster mom and will form a similar deep bond with her future family with love, patience, and a structured setting. She thrives with a consistent routine.
