About Finley Male cocker spaniel DOB Sept 2025
Finley is a vibrant, outgoing puppy who refuses to let his lack of sight slow him down! He is one of the most confident, brave, and joy-filled dogs you will ever meet. If you are looking for an adventurous companion who greets every day with a wagging tail, Finley is your boy. You'll often forget he is blind! He plays like any other dog, goes for walks, and hangs out in the house with his family. Finley maps his environment, learning floor plans, where things are, and how many steps to take before he needs to turn. He knows where his water bowl is and when it's mealtime. He occasionally bumps into things, but a simple call-out redirects him. Finley has graduated Adolescent Life Skills training with flying colours. He knows sit, his recall is excellent, and he's working on loose-leash walking, touch, "let's go!", and "leave it!". He is highly food-motivated and loves to learn, making training very successful. He enjoys 15-30 minute walks twice a day, using his incredible sense of smell to explore. When he's not walking, he loves running in a fully fenced yard or playing with his toys. Finley is a phenomenal car traveler, settling in his crate for rides up to 1.5 hours. When he's not exploring or playing, he loves to cuddle on the couch for a nap. Finley's adoption fee has been reduced to $500.
Ideal Home
Finley would do best in a home with a securely fenced yard. He needs a family that is home more often than not, as he can only be crated or left in a safe area for up to 3 hours. He would do well as a solo dog or with a playful, non-dominant canine sibling. Any resident dog must be patient, as Finley may accidentally bump into them. He requires a strictly cat-free home due to his high prey drive. Children in the home must be respectful, dog-savvy, and over 10 years old. His ideal adopters will have experience with blind dogs or be genuinely committed to learning how to support him. Due to his life expectancy, puppies are not a suitable match for seniors 65+.
Ongoing Health
Finley has anterior segment dysgenesis, a congenital malformation of both eyes leading to blindness. He has no sight in his left eye and believes he can see some shadows in his right. He is not in any pain or discomfort and currently requires no medications. His eyes are stable, and annual monitoring by a regular vet is recommended as he matures.
Training & Support
Finley has graduated Adolescent Life Skills training and is working on "leave it!". He is highly food-motivated and loves to learn. He loves to chew but redirects easily to appropriate toys; keeping him occupied with chews and mental stimulation is key. Finley exhibits some resource guarding behaviors towards other dogs around his food, bowl, and high-value chews. In a multi-dog home, this is managed by feeding him in a separate space. If he is a solo dog, there should be no issues. Adopters are required to enroll in a positive reinforcement training class as part of the adoption contract.
Application Details:
