Harry

Meet Harry! Harry is a sweet, scruffy little guy approximately two to three years old and weighing 12.5 pounds. Our best guess is that he is a Chihuahua/Shih Tzu/Terrier mix, with an adorable wiry coat and a personality that is beginning to shine more each day. Harry came to us from a situation where 11 dogs were rescued from a single household, and he may possibly even be another dog's dad. In his previous home, the dogs were allowed to roam the yard and surrounding streets, so Harry came into rescue with no experience walking on a leash. We are introducing leash walking slowly and helping him learn that walks can be a fun and positive experience. Because of his history and lack of leash experience, Harry is a little shy when meeting new people and needs a bit of time to feel comfortable. So far, he tends to trust women more quickly than men, but he continues to gain confidence as he learns that he is safe. Once Harry trusts you, he is quite the Velcro dog! He loves to snuggle, would happily sleep in the human bed, and has the endearing habit of rubbing against his people like a cat. He is mostly a couch-and-snuggle kind of guy right now, although we think he may eventually enjoy going for walks as his confidence and leash skills improve. He has not shown much interest in toys yet, but Harry is still settling in and discovering what life as a cherished companion is all about. Harry is doing great with housetraining when kept on a regular schedule. He is crate trained, although he may protest a little at first. Interestingly, when the crate door is left open, he will often choose to go inside and lie down on his own. He also seems to do well when left alone and greets his foster mom and dad with excited barks when they return. He is quiet and calm on car rides and is eating well on a small kibble mixed with a little canned food and boiled chicken. Harry is fine around other nice dogs but would probably also be perfectly happy as an only dog, soaking up all the attention for himself. He is currently being fostered with his brother, Charlie. The two are somewhat dependent on each other and could potentially be adopted together but that is not necessary. Like many siblings, they occasionally have words with each other—their grumbles sound much more dramatic than the actual interaction! Harry has not been tested with cats.

Ideal Home

Harry's ideal home will have a securely fenced yard. A home without young children would likely be the best fit, although he has done well with a dog-experienced child.

Ongoing Health

Harry tested positive for exposure to Lyme disease but is currently showing no symptoms. His adopter should discuss any recommended monitoring or follow-up care with their veterinarian.

Training & Support

Harry needs a bit of time to feel comfortable when meeting new people. His adopter will need to be patient and help him build trust with handling and grooming, especially around his face, as he is not yet comfortable with it. He is still learning leash walking skills.

Transporation

Harry is located in High Point, NC. We do not ship animals, and preference is given to applicants within a 90-mile range due to the requirement of a home visit before finalizing any adoptions.
