Cheii came to us in October 2025 via our rescue partners at RezRoads Rescue. He was named Cheii, a Navajo word for grandfather. It became apparent that Cheii had endured a great deal of suffering. He arrived with a previously broken jaw that had healed out of alignment, significant dental disease with many missing teeth, cataracts in both eyes, old scars with thin and patchy fur due to a low thyroid level, and most notably, a positive heartworm test. He began heartworm treatment and was transferred to us, where he settled into a local foster home in Moab.
Cheii quickly became comfortable with the resident cats and dogs. He learned to enjoy leash walks, though they must be kept short while he recovers from the effects of heartworm infection on his heart. He tolerates baths and nail trims well and loves being brushed.
Cheii is not overly affectionate with people, but he does need to be near you or know where you are at all times. He is hard of hearing and has limited vision, but he navigates his environment with ease. He always responds to a whistle or high-pitched baby talk. He is highly motivated by food and treats and enjoys leisurely afternoons soaking up the sun in Moab.
Cheii cannot be placed on elevated furniture as his poor eyesight makes him prone to falling. He is content on the floor, often curled up in a dog bed. He happily wears a male wrap at night due to occasional potty accidents in the house, which may be related to his age, his prednisone medication for his heartworm cough, or his previous intact status.
He tested negative for heartworm in May but still has four more months of monthly treatment to ensure all the heartworms are gone from his small 15-pound body. He was neutered on June 10th. He also underwent a dental procedure and had a mass removed from his back that had been repeatedly breaking open and oozing. Fortunately, he was able to keep some of his upper and lower molars, allowing him to continue enjoying his favorite crunchy treats like kale stems and apple slices.
While Cheii may not be an overtly affectionate dog, he will entertain you for hours as you watch him navigate his world, roll on his back in his bed, and prance on his walks. If you have a soft spot in your home for this sweet, elderly gentleman, please reach out.
