About Ralphie

Ralphie is a charming 12-13 year old, 54-pound male Husky mix who's ready to find his retirement home! This sweet senior came to us as a stray, and while we don't know his full story, we know he's a special boy with a lot of love left to give. Ralphie has some age-related vision and hearing loss, and his breathing is a little rough due to laryngeal paralysis, but he takes it all in stride. He's a low-energy dog who enjoys his naps and is happy to doze in his favorite spot. Despite his age, he still has a bit of that husky attitude and will "talk back" when he doesn't want to do something, but he's also a smart cookie who knows "sit," "paw," and "down" with hand signals. He's even a great walker on a leash, rarely pulling. Ralphie is house-trained and crate-trained, though he might need a gentle nudge to get him settled in his crate at first. He's good in the car and has shown to be pretty calm during introductions with other dogs, so he'd do best with other low-key canine companions. We haven't tested him with cats, but he seemed indifferent to outdoor cats.

Ideal Home

Ralphie would do best in a home with older kids or teenagers who understand he enjoys his sleep and doesn't want to be bothered too much. He doesn't require a fenced yard if he's kept on a leash, which is important due to his vision and hearing impairments.

Ongoing Health

Ralphie has some vision and hearing loss, and his breathing can be a bit rough due to laryngeal paralysis. He also has some "old man joints." He is currently taking gabapentin and carprofen for pain management and receives a monthly round of antibiotics for his teeth. The estimated monthly cost for his medical care is about $50. He can sometimes struggle on slippery floors.

Training & Support

Ralphie knows "sit," "paw," and "down" and responds well to hand signals. He can be a bit stubborn and "talks back" when he doesn't want to do something, a typical husky trait! He's a great choice for someone who loves the husky look without the high energy.
