Houghie

Houghie is a comical, hefty bulldawg who arrived with us as an unclaimed stray. He's a character who initially displayed some resource guarding, especially around items he found interesting like a power drill or his favorite boots and kiddie pools – he really prefers to enjoy these treasures on his own terms! While Houghie sometimes seemed to want to play with other dogs, his enthusiasm could quickly turn into bulldozing, so he'd likely do best as the sole canine companion. His foster mom has been diligently working with him on earning his toys and treats, and he's showing great improvement with consistent guidance.

Ideal Home

Houghie needs adopters who are experienced with the bulldog breed and understand their unique quirks. A securely fenced yard is a must for his safety and enjoyment. He absolutely must be an inside dog, ensuring he's a part of the family and protected from the elements.

Ongoing Health

Houghie experienced a rectal prolapse following his neuter. Initially treated with a purse-string suture, he unfortunately prolapsed again, requiring a colopexy surgery. It's possible some of his earlier behaviors might have been linked to discomfort. He is now doing well after his surgery and neuter, and seems to have really chilled out. He must be kept on heartworm prevention.

Training & Support

Houghie has been working on his resource guarding and is making good progress with positive reinforcement training focused on earning his rewards. His foster mom's efforts have helped him understand the concept of earning, leading to better behavior. Patience and continued positive reinforcement will be key to his continued success.
