Ansel

Ansel is an affectionate, loyal, and smart 5-year-old, 78-pound yellow male Labrador Retriever. He absolutely loves being with his people, leaning against them or cuddling close. Ansel is crate-trained, house-trained, and knows several commands, including sit, stay, touch, come, down, and wait. He's well-mannered around doors and doesn't bolt outside. His favorite activity is playing fetch for hours, and he also enjoys car rides, adventures, beach trips, and spending time with his family. Ansel doesn't suffer from separation anxiety and is comfortable when his family is away. He has no food or resource guarding and has done well at doggie daycare, enjoying off-leash play with other dogs. Ansel was originally from a breeder and has lived with his current family for four years. Due to a divorce, his family must now find him a new loving home and reached out to Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Rescue.

Ideal Home

Ansel would do best with older children rather than very young kids or frail adults due to his size and strength. He should not live with cats or other small animals, as he has a strong instinct to chase them. He would thrive with an active family that understands the Labrador breed and enjoys including their dog in everyday life.

Ongoing Health

Ansel is a healthy Labrador with no known medical issues. He is neutered, current on all vaccinations, on regular flea and tick prevention, and in excellent physical condition.

Training & Support

Ansel can be tempted by food left on the counter, so keeping snacks out of reach is recommended. While he occasionally shows leash reactivity toward certain dogs, his family has had success redirecting his attention with his favorite ball while walking him in a harness. Continued positive training, especially with leash manners, will help him succeed. His tennis ball is an excellent training tool and can easily redirect his attention when he becomes excited. He can also be tempted to eat animal droppings during walks, so he is typically kept on leash except in safe areas like the beach where he's focused on playing fetch.
