About Odie

Hi, I'm Odie! I'm a handsome 4-year-old, 65-pound black Rottweiler mix with a heart full of love and a past that's made me a little unsure of the world. My journey started tough, being found as a tiny puppy by the roadside, but I found a special person to love. That early experience has left me with some anxiety and fear, but I'm working hard every day to overcome it. I'm neutered and house-trained, and I'm currently on medication to help manage my anxiety, which has made a big difference! I can be a bit shy with new people, but once I build trust, I form incredibly deep bonds. I've been a total sweetheart with my family's 5-month-old baby, and I'm told I'm very gentle. While I haven't lived with other children, I think older, dog-savvy kids would be a great fit for me. My experience with other dogs has been limited to boarding, where I apparently did well, but I haven't had the chance to live with them. I'm definitely not a cat person! I'm a playful and smart pup who adores my toys and loves a good zoomie session. I know commands like "sit," "speak," and "shake," and I genuinely want to please my people. I just need someone who understands how to guide me with patience and consistency.

My anxiety can sometimes show itself as protectiveness, especially towards my mom. I might bark or growl if strangers approach her, and I also find crates really scary, making it a challenge to get me inside. When I'm left alone, I feel most comfortable with access to just one room. My family even used a baby monitor to help me feel safe when they couldn't be there. Since the baby arrived, I've been a bit more stressed, and sometimes I get into things I shouldn't, like the trash. I'm not trying to be naughty; I'm just feeling overwhelmed and unsure how to cope. My family has tried their best, but they realize I need more time, structure, and confidence than they can currently provide, especially with a new baby. They believe I'd do best in a home without young children under 14.

Ideal Home

I'm looking for a home with an experienced dog owner who is patient, steady, and confident. Someone who understands fear-based behaviors and can set clear, gentle boundaries. I'm not the best fit for a timid handler or a first-time dog owner. I need someone who can help me feel safe and not overwhelmed. My family has also noted that I can become overstimulated and redirect that energy onto those around me, and I have had a single bite incident. I would do best in a home that will provide me with training to teach me that I can relax around strangers and don't need to defend the household.

Ongoing Health

I'm neutered and house-trained. I'm currently on Reconcile to help manage my anxiety.

Training & Support

I need a patient and confident owner who understands fear-based behaviors and can provide consistent structure and clear boundaries. I can be protective and may bark or growl at strangers. I also struggle with crates.
