Happy was found living under a car in South Jersey. A kind man had been feeding him until Animal Control was finally able to get him safely to a shelter. The shelter reached out to us knowing we have a soft spot and experience with grumpy old men, and believing a sanctuary environment would be the perfect fit for him.
When Happy first arrived, he was growly, nippy, standoffish, and wanted absolutely nothing to do with people. Fast forward to today and Happy is now one of the first dogs walking up to guests looking for pets at the sanctuary. He takes pets nicely now, although he still gets hesitant about being picked up, so we continue working on that slowly and respectfully at his pace. Happy is looking for someone willing to take a chance on a little old man who spent too long surviving instead of living.
Ideal Home
We believe Happy would thrive in a calm home with mellow pets. He does fantastic with most of the 24 dogs at the sanctuary, except for Mouse, who he's had lifelong beef with. We would not recommend him for a home with active young children.
Ongoing Health
Happy does have a heart murmur that we are currently monitoring. At this time he does not require medication, and our vet would prefer to hold off on neuter and dental procedures for now due to his health concerns. Because of this, Happy would be considered a Forever Foster through Pattie's Waggin' Tails Senior Sanctuary, meaning we continue supporting his medical care.
Training & Support
Happy still gets hesitant about being picked up, so we continue working on that slowly and respectfully at his pace. We believe Happy would make an amazing companion for a retiree or quiet adult household that understands patience, decompression, and letting a scared dog learn how to trust again.
