About Darla
Hello! My name is Darla. I'm a 4-year-old, 20 lb mini-Bernadoodle, and my foster mom says I'm like a gently browned marshmallow – soft and sweet on the inside, just waiting to break out of the slightly charred exterior I sometimes hide behind. My past wasn't very fun; my sole purpose was being a mama dog, and I didn't get much human interaction, which made trusting people a real challenge when I arrived at the rescue.
It's been a journey learning what it's like to be a dog in a loving home. I used to avoid people altogether, but now I happily take treats and enjoy gentle neck scratches, growing more confident each day. Watching my foster dog siblings makes it look so easy! I'm slowly becoming more comfortable and would benefit from a calm, confident canine companion in my future home to help show me the way. I haven't met any cats, but I'm happy to coexist with the bunny and chickens here. I love snuggling in a comfy bed, I have a great appetite, and walks are my absolute favorite! They help me relax and feel like myself – my tail wags, and I even prance a little!
I am a good dog: kind, loving, and gentle. I'm okay with being held and secretly adore neck scratches. I've made huge progress in my foster home but still have some ways to go to become the best version of myself. I need a person or family who "gets" me, who can be steady and consistent, and who is willing to work with me and train me to build my trust. I need someone confident, patient, and understanding, as I will likely be shy initially. A structured routine and a calm home are essential. I've met children and liked them, but a home with too much high energy wouldn't be the best fit. Am I worth the effort? Absolutely! My foster mom always says the dog chooses their family, and since I don't make decisions lightly, any potential family will need to commit to multiple visits with me before I come home for good. This will help my transition be smoother for both of us!
Ideal Home
I would benefit from another calm and confident canine sibling. A home with a consistent, structured routine and a calm environment is essential. While I like children, a home without excessive energy would be best. A fenced yard is ideal but not required depending on your living situation and exercise schedule.
Ongoing Health
I am up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed, microchipped, and on monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventatives. My dental was done at the time of my spay.
Training & Support
I am working on my socialization and have zero aggression, but I can be fearful and a flight risk if let loose outside of a secured yard. I am leash-trained and crate-trained. I am house-trained, though regression is common in new environments.
