Diego is a handsome 2-year-old, approximately 60 lb boy who has had a rough start but is ready for his second chance at a happy life. He was surrendered by his previous owner and ended up in a high-kill shelter in Alabama. Fortunately, a rescue affiliate stepped in to save him. Diego was vetted and began heartworm treatment. He was adopted to New York, but sadly, the home wasn't the right fit. He's a young, active dog who needs space to run and play. He's currently with a temporary foster who is helping him learn how to be a dog. Despite his past, Diego still loves people and is affectionate, loyal, and protective.
Ideal Home
Diego needs a home where he can be active and have plenty of opportunities to run and play. Due to his high prey drive, he cannot be in a home with cats. He is a fence-scaler and a jumper, so a secure, fenced yard is extremely important. He can be overstimulated by other animals, so slow introductions with dogs his size are recommended.
Ongoing Health
Diego is fully vetted and currently undergoing heartworm treatment, which is covered by the rescue.
Training & Support
Diego is house-trained and knows basic commands like sit, down, bed/place, and go. He is still learning leash manners, structure, obedience, and trust. He has made great progress but will need a committed adopter who understands that healing from past neglect takes time and patience. His foster has noted that he was initially fearful of thrown objects and had no leash-walking skills, suggesting a past of neglect.
