Zyla is simply the cutest!!! This 2.5-year-old girl is a Pit Bull and Pug mix (at least that is our best guess) and she weighs 40 pounds. Zyla was rescued from our friends at SCRATCH while they were working on a local TNR project. She lived in a small pen with 3 other large dogs and had a litter of 9 puppies. Sadly, only 1 puppy survived but was fortunately taken home by one of the rescuers and has already been adopted. Because of Zyla's past environment, she is extremely shy and startles easy, but does great around every dog she has ever met. She blends with the lobby dogs and follows their lead when greeting new people. It makes us so happy to see her confidence grow every day, but we know that she will always remain a "flight risk" when afraid and must be handled very carefully when leaving the protection of the shelter or a home environment.
I'm Zyla, and I had a rough start to life. For this reason, I'm shy around new people, but hanging around with other dogs in the lobby has taught me a lot of things--most importantly, that cheese is the best food ever! I've also learned that a gentle paw on the arm elicits pets 100% of the time (possibly because I have the best puppy dog eyes in town). I recently spent some time in a foster home and made huge progress: I learned how to walk on a leash, figured out some of the weird sounds a house makes, and realized how much I enjoy sleeping in a big bed where I get cuddles from a human all night. I'll need patience and practice to continue acclimating to a home environment and get comfortable meeting new people, going on car rides, and walking on a leash. But once I've figured out you're my friend, it doesn't take long to win my love!
Ideal Home
Zyla needs a patient and understanding home that will allow her to continue to build her confidence. She must be handled very carefully when leaving the shelter or a home environment, as she can be a flight risk when afraid.
