Gretel is a loving and happy pup once she trusts. She's an extremely smart girl who learns quickly with repetition. Gretel knows "sit," "down," and "wait," and is learning recall with a hand-to-nose touch. She adores treats and responds well to frequent, short training sessions with high-value rewards. Gretel is slowly learning to enjoy toys and playing with other dogs. She gets excited by repeated positive experiences, but it takes her time to get there. Her drive to please and overcome fears is immense, but she needs to progress at a pace that allows her to learn positively and build trust. Gretel is a very timid and shy girl with many fears, requiring patience to overcome them. She is gradually learning to be part of a family, and her trust grows daily, though meeting new people is still challenging. She gets along well with other dogs and often follows their lead. Gretel is fully house-trained and will seek out a quiet spot when feeling nervous or afraid. She has learned to accept being touched and enjoys ear scratches and belly rubs. Gretel now tolerates a leash and harness and will walk in quiet areas, though she is easily startled by noises, people, and wind, and looks to return home. She walks well with other dogs, but quiet environments are essential; she is not yet comfortable walking near traffic and noise. She will bolt if frightened. Before leaving Cortez Rescue, Gretel will receive a full medical assessment to ensure she remains in optimal health.
Ideal Home
Gretel needs a quiet home environment. Other dogs are okay and may even be helpful. She needs someone willing to let her advance at her own speed, offering gentle encouragement when she's ready, otherwise, she may shut down. She will not yet walk by roadways with traffic and noise and will bolt if afraid.
Ongoing Health
Gretel will be given a full medical assessment before leaving Cortez Rescue.
Training & Support
Gretel is learning to play with toys and other dogs and is working on recall. She can be startled by noises, people, and wind.
