<p data-start="0" data-end="128">This pup is part of a very special group of dogs called Paws of Promise a program born out of urgency, compassion, and hope.</p>
<p data-start="130" data-end="551">In late October, we received a message from a local rescue in Southern California needing help with a severe hoarding situation involving 65 Chihuahuas. We immediately reached out to offer our assistance. After the dogs were vaccinated and neutered, plans were made to bring them north. The rescue and their incredible community of volunteers worked tirelessly for weeks to prepare the dogs for their journey to safety.</p>
<p data-start="553" data-end="858">Once they arrived, it became clear just how neglected they had been. Many were emotionally shut down and had never learned to trust people. We moved them to a safe farm setting and began the slow, patient work of rebuilding confidence starting with something as simple as taking treats from our hands.</p>
<p data-start="860" data-end="1086">We also discovered the heartbreaking extent of their medical neglect. The dental decay was severe, with some dogs suffering immense infection and requiring full-mouth extractions to relieve their pain and allow them to heal.</p>
<p data-start="1088" data-end="1384">With the support of Unite Canine Training, each dog is completing multiple weeks of intensive board-and-train, working daily with professional trainers to build leash skills, confidence, and the ability to safely exist in the world. Their training and handling continue well beyond the program.</p>
<p data-start="1386" data-end="1745">These dogs have made remarkable progress but they are not "easy" dogs. They will need dedicated, patient, and confident handlers willing to continue their structure and training. Though deeply traumatized, they are learning that humans can be kind. Watching once-terrified dogs walk calmly on leash or accept gentle touch reminds us why this work matters.</p>
