About NICK (formerly Mr Fox)
It's been wonderful getting to know Nick over the past few weeks. Once he has chosen his person, he is incredibly affectionate and loyal. He absolutely loves couch time (and honestly, he seems to be watching TV with us!), is always happy to go for a walk, but is equally content to spend the day relaxing nearby. While we work from home, he happily settles at our feet for hours. His favorite thing in the world is belly rubs—he would happily accept them all day. He sleeps soundly through the night and, given the choice, would much rather sleep on the human's bed than his own. He's not especially food-motivated, although high-value treats can be helpful. He enjoys a peanut butter Kong and occasionally has fun batting around an ice cube. So far, he hasn't shown much interest in toys or active play with other dogs.
He's a smart dog who enjoys learning and has already picked up several basic cues. He knows sit, come, and leave it, and he's making steady progress learning not to pull on the leash. His natural walking pace is more of a brisk trot (or even a light jog for us!). That said, he doesn't need nonstop exercise. One of his favorite activities is simply sniffing his way through a walk. Giving him time to investigate scents seems to be just as mentally satisfying as the physical exercise and is one of the best ways to help him relax and feel content afterward.
On walks, he enjoys seeing other dogs and almost always wants to greet them. He has shown appropriate social interest in dogs, but he's much more hesitant around unfamiliar people. This is probably the biggest thing a potential adopter should understand. He does not do well when people try to make friends with him by approaching, reaching toward him, offering treats, or attempting to pet him. Those well-intentioned interactions can actually make him more uncomfortable. The best approach is to let him set the pace. Ignore him, don't ask anything of him, and allow him to decide when he's ready to approach. He's an incredibly loving companion, but earning the trust of others requires patience and letting him make the first move. He forms a very strong bond with his trusted person and genuinely seems happiest simply being close to them. Whether we're walking, working, or relaxing on the couch, he just wants to be nearby. He has excellent recall with the person he trusts and is eager to stay connected. Overall, he's a calm, easy dog to live with once he feels secure. He doesn't need constant activity or entertainment—he simply wants a predictable routine, a patient human who understands that trust from strangers can't be rushed, and plenty of opportunities for belly rubs and quiet companionship. For the right person, he'll be an incredibly devoted best friend.
