About Hobbs
I'd love to be your best buddy! In front of you, beside you, or right on your tail: I want to be with you.
Hi! I'm Hobbs. I have learned so much in my foster home. We are always working on new things or improving how I do the things I know. I am sweet, goofy, playful, and can be intensely energetic at times. I love to be by your side or looking out a window - preferably with you. I'm great at fetch indoors with small tosses, or bigger throws in the yard. I can even play "turns" with light ball tosses in the house with my foster sister. I'm better at waiting my turn than she is!
I am super smart! I have some great cues that I know will impress you. Some I picked up after just a couple repetitions. I'd love to show you. "Calm" is probably my best and favorite. "Back" is good too. I'm getting pretty good at "place" so I'm out of the way during meal prep. I know "go pee", "upstairs", "in the house", and of course the basics "sit, down, shake, off." I get upset and sad if I think I did it wrong so praise and reassurance matter a lot. If there's a squeaker or toy piece on the floor I'll bring it to you and wait for payment in treat form. You should have treats ready for quick payment. I've made progress on walking. It's still not easy and I continue to work on it. Rabbits are my downfall. I pull suddenly and hard trying to chase them. I do love evening walks when it's cool and quiet and I can sniff everything. I get super excited in the car and I have this screamy bark for the first few blocks, then I settle down. I don't like the crate much. I'll go in, but I bark and howl when I'm left in there. I can be free in the house without destroying things though, so I don't need the crate much. I am happiest if I'm just free in the house. I do okay just in a room too if that works better for you. If I do get nervous, taking a drink calms me so a bowl of water available is helpful. I have a very strong dislike of delivery trucks and their drivers. They are super suspicious! I really don't like that they come to the porch sometimes. Even just driving by bothers me. The vacuum and I don't get along. The lawn mower is no better. I try to grab them, so it's best if I'm in a different room when you vacuum - in the house when you mow. The wind scares me. I look for a safe place under a desk or need some reassurance on windy days. I am very willing and eager to work on things so I hope my new human(s) feel the same.
I love my foster sisters. They are nearly my size but older and can't play the way I'd like to play. Slow introductions to other dogs are probably smart. I live with a macaw who is out of his cage a lot and I get along with him. It took a while for us to get used to each other. I've not been around cats recently. They might look too much like rabbits so probably not ideal.
Older kids are fine. I'm likely a bit too much for smaller ones. I get a bit jumpy sometimes and I race around when I'm excited. I'd love someone to play fetch with me. Maybe a teenager. I live with a young adult and I am super careful with him. I help take care of him, waking him up in the mornings and watching over him while he's in the bath. I know not to jump on him, even when I'm excited.
I love to play with anything! I really love tug. Anything can become a tug toy. Watch your fingers. Sometimes I cheat. A ball to toss gently inside and a cloth frisbee for outside are wonderful! I like squeaker toys but I do remove the squeakers pretty quickly. Soft fluffy toys are great. They don't last long though. I love them even after the fluff and squeakers come out.
Ideal Home
A 6 foot privacy fence is a must! I don't dig to get under it but I'm a great jumper! I'd like some indoor space to play. I really need a good sized yard. Someone who will play with me, sit with me, work with me on getting better with walks would be perfect. Loud noises can make me nervous. I love when the house is quiet and I can really relax. Patience with me while I learn your routines please. Once I know the routine, I'll be calmer. I am eager to please and try to anticipate what I should do next. I'd love a dog around my size and age to play with. I would also be fine as your only dog. I love attention and being close. I'd like to sleep at the foot of your bed and sit on the couch with you too. I've become quite fond of the couch. If you're looking for a smart, sweet, playful best friend, I'm your guy!

Training & Support
Hobbs knows many commands, including "calm," "back," "place," "go pee," "upstairs," "in the house," "sit," "down," "shake," and "off." He thrives on praise and reassurance. He needs continued work on leash walking, especially around rabbits, and can be reactive to delivery trucks, vacuums, and lawnmowers. He dislikes crating and gets anxious with wind. Providing a water bowl when he's nervous can help him calm down.
