Oreo is an 11-month-old, 15.5-pound Sheltie-Miniature Poodle mix who came into our program as a neglected and unwanted pup from an abandoned litter. He's a sweet and affectionate boy who loves to cuddle but can be easily frightened by loud noises and unfamiliar people, often barking at strangers. Oreo is still working on his socialization and housebreaking skills but is making great progress in his foster home. He enjoys playing with toys and other dogs, though he is quite submissive and sometimes gets picked on by more dominant dogs. He needs a patient and understanding home to help him continue to grow and learn.
Ideal Home
Oreo would thrive in a home with another small, playful, and easy-going dog who can be a positive influence and playmate. A secure, fenced yard is a must, as he loves to play outside but doesn't always come when called. Due to his energy level and frequent need to go outside for potty training, a townhouse or single-family home is ideal; he would not do well in an apartment. Children in the home should be 12 years or older and respectful of his sensitive nature.
Ongoing Health
Oreo has been neutered, microchipped, and is up-to-date on his distemper and rabies vaccinations. He will require professional grooming 4-5 times per year, so please ensure this is an affordable commitment for the next 12-15 years.
Training & Support
Oreo knows "sit" and walks fairly well on leash, though he can pull when excited by squirrels. He is in his "chewing stage" and needs plenty of approved chew toys. He is crated when left alone and does not bark in his crate. He is making good progress with housebreaking but isn't reliably potty trained yet. He doesn't always signal the need to go out, so a consistent schedule of about every 4 hours is recommended. He needs supervision when he goes outside to ensure he finishes his business, as he can get distracted. Basic obedience classes would be beneficial for him.
