About Bonnabelle

Pet location: Bonnabelle is currently living in a foster home. If you’d like to schedule a time to meet her, please contact Wayside Adoptions at (816) 986-4426.

My friends at Wayside say:

  • I am from a puppy mill situation. I will likely need extra time to adjust to home life. I have lived with other dogs but have not socialized with people until recently. Things like walking on a leash and going through doorways can be challenging for me. Adopting me will be extremely rewarding, but I need time to learn.
  • I am not fully housebroken, but I am working on it in my foster home.
  • I get along well with the other dogs that I live with in foster.

My home needs are:

  • I must go to a home with another social, friendly dog to show me the ropes.
  • I need a home with kids 6 years old and older since I tend to be nervous around new people and loud noises.
  • Wayside recommends that I have a fenced-in yard since I am still learning to walk on leash.
  • For my safety, I must go home on an anti-slip collar called a Martingale Collar. For your convenience, we sell them at our retail store, Whiskers and Wags.

Hi there, I’m Bonnabelle! I’m sweet and affectionate and yes, just a little stubborn at times. That’s okay, though, it keeps things interesting, and you’ll forgive me for being stubborn when I look up at you with my big, gentle eyes. I can’t wait to follow you around the house and to jump in your lap for pets whenever possible. I can’t wait to be your dog! I hope you want that too.

I’m a darling, 5-year-old, 12-pound bundle of love, with the cutest little expressive face, soft fur that will need regular grooming, and a lovely personality. I’m a work in progress with housebreaking. Please stay patient and calm with me as I learn. If you get me outside on a regular and frequent schedule, it will help to set me up for success. I came to Wayside after I was rescued from an awful life full of neglect in a puppy mill. It has been a stressful and confusing time for me. I was happy to get the vet care I needed, including having several teeth extracted due to dental disease, and I feel so much better now. Still, the big shelter felt terrifying. I was lucky to be chosen to live in a loving foster home as I wait to get adopted. Foster Mom makes me feel special and loved for the very first time in my life.

Everything about living in a home is new and strange to me, so my foster parents have let me go at my own pace as I’ve settled in. It took about a week of just watching everything from afar before I was able to relax and get comfortable. These days, my favorite place to be is wherever Foster Mom is. I love following her around the house, cuddling with her on the couch, curling up close to her on the bed, going with her for walks...she calls me her little velcro dog, because I’m always right by her side, and I don’t like to be apart from her. I haven’t warmed up to Foster Dad quite yet, but I will, with time and patience. I’m wary of new people when they stop by to visit, too. Connecting to and forming a bond with people is all new to me, and these things just take time. But I’ll get there!

Other than not being fully housebroken, I’m very well behaved in the house. I don’t bother a thing, even when no one is home. Perhaps because it reminds me of my puppy mill days, I panic when I am crated or confined, so that’s not an option for me. At night, I get to sleep on the bed with Foster Mom. I’m a quiet and easygoing friend who is happy to live a simple life. We have a fenced yard, where I love to hang out and keep track of the birds, squirrels, and bunnies, or simply sit in the shade, breathing in the fresh air and watching the neighborhood activity. I enjoy being outside, and I would love to have a securely fenced yard in my new home as well. I am a flight risk because of my past, and also due to my size, I will need to always be supervised when I am outside to help me stay safe, and I must always be on a leash or in a fenced area. I enjoy going for a couple leisurely walks each day with Foster Mom. I walk well on my leash using my harness, and I’m excited to see other dogs along the way as I walk. I don’t need a ton of exercise, but these daily outings make me happy.

I have excellent doggie social skills. At Wayside, I was polite and wiggly with the other dogs I met. I currently live with a senior dog who just likes to hang out, and a dog about my size who likes to cuddle with me. I need a home with another friendly, social dog who will help me adjust to my new life. I hope to find a quiet and calm home without a lot of commotion and with kids over the age of at least 6 who will give me space when I need it.

I can’t wait to live a safe, carefree, and peaceful life with people I love. That will be enough for me. I’m so grateful that I made it out of the puppy mill. And I’m so happy and ready to start this next adventure on the journey of my precious life. I can’t wait to share it all with you.

Love, Bonnabelle
