Hazelnut is a gorgeous, approximately 65-pound, 4-year-old spayed female German Shepherd with a heart full of affection, energy, loyalty, and personality! She absolutely adores to snuggle and will happily bury her head in your chest on the bed if given the chance. While she's definitely partial to women, she's not fearful of men. Hazelnut loves being petted, but can be sensitive around her hindquarters or groin area; she won't bite, but will move away if she feels uncomfortable. She is healthy, up-to-date on core vaccinations, and microchipped.
Hazelnut was found as a stray and brought to the Tracy city animal shelter in June 2022. Initially, she was very fearful and reactive towards strangers and other dogs. However, she soon formed strong bonds with several female shelter staff and animal control officers. When potential adopters visited, she would either bark fearfully or retreat. After over a year at the shelter, she was transferred to GSRSV's rescue ranch in September 2023. It took about 45 minutes of treats and toys to gain her trust and walk out with her on leash.
Ideal Home
Hazelnut would thrive in a home with experienced GSD handlers who are willing to invest the time to help her continue to mature. She is not a candidate for a home with cats. She is confident that she would do well with older children, but her tendency to mouth hands during play might be too much for younger children. A large, active, and confident male dog companion would likely be a great match for her. She is not suited for dog parks and will likely be reactive to other dogs on leash, at least without further training.
Ongoing Health
Hazelnut is healthy and has been kept up-to-date on core vaccinations.
Training & Support
Hazelnut is house-trained and has had no accidents indoors. She is a "Velcro" dog who loves to be close to her people, even following them into the bathroom! She walks well on a leash but may need some refreshers on her skills. Her tendency to play-fight with other dogs in a challenging way has not mellowed with time. She will stop when commanded but often resumes the behavior. She readily obeys a "crate" command and behaves well when crated. An experienced owner willing to put in the effort could help her overcome this.
