About Gretel

Gretel is a loving and happy pup once she trusts. She is an extremely smart girl and learns quickly with repetition, already knowing sit, down, and wait, and is working on recall. Gretel loves her treats and responds well to short, frequent training sessions with high-value rewards. She is slowly learning to play with toys and other dogs, and while she gets excited by repeated positive events, it takes time for her to get there. Her drive to please and overcome her fears is huge, but she needs to learn at her own pace with positive reinforcement and trust-building. Gretel is timid and shy, with many fears that require patience to overcome. She is gradually learning to be part of a family, and while her trust grows daily, meeting new people is still a challenge. She gets along well with other dogs and often follows their lead. Gretel is fully house-trained and will retreat to her quiet spot when nervous.

Ideal Home

A quieter home environment is ideal for Gretel. Other well-behaved dogs are welcome, but she would do best with someone patient who will allow her to advance at her own speed, with gentle encouragement when she's ready. Pushing her too quickly will cause her to shut down. She has learned to accept being touched and enjoys ear scratches and belly rubs.

Ongoing Health

Gretel will receive a full medical assessment before leaving Cortez Rescue to ensure she remains in optimum health.

Training & Support

Gretel is learning to accept a leash and harness and will walk in quiet areas. She is often startled by noises, people, and wind and seeks to return home. She walks well with other dogs, but quiet surroundings are necessary. She is not yet comfortable walking near roadways with traffic and noise and will bolt if afraid.
