Inga is a 2-year-old female Bernese Mountain Dog, weighing just over 80lbs and still filling out. She embodies the typical silly and goofy nature of her breed, named in honor of its Swiss heritage. As a giant breed that matures slowly, Inga is currently in her "teenage" phase, experiencing bursts of energy and silliness, but is generally a moderate-energy dog who will grow into the sweet, placid Berner we all know and love. Inga's past life as a puppy mill mom means her early years were spent in a barn, and she had never been in a house or worn a collar until recently. Much of the world is new to her, and she can be nervous trying new things, requiring a calm and confident owner to help her explore.
Ideal Home
Inga would thrive in a home with a securely fenced backyard, as she is still nervous about doing her business on leash. She also needs a quiet neighborhood, small town, or rural setting, as busy city life with its cars and bikes can be overwhelming. She is not suited for a home with a young family due to noise and activity, and would do best in an adult-only home or one with gentle teens. Inga prefers a calm environment with fewer gatherings, visitors, or parties, as she is a sensitive girl who needs quiet to feel secure. She would like to be the only dog in the home, though she can be affectionate with a dog-savvy cat.
Ongoing Health
Inga has been spayed and is up-to-date on all her vaccines. She was treated for an ear infection, and while it has cleared, one ear often still has buildup. Her foster family wipes out her ear daily, which she enjoys. She is a healthy girl who will just need ongoing monitoring and ear cleaning. She can be nervous around unfamiliar people, including at the vet.
Training & Support
Inga is doing well with leash training and is a pleasure to walk, but she requires more structured training. Her teenage phase can lead to sudden excitement, jumping, and playful wrestling. Her new owner must be committed to helping her burn off energy and feel confident managing her excitement and playfulness, as she is a large breed who can charge or jump without notice. She has had no accidents in the house and is calm and quiet in her crate, though she can be stubborn about going in. She has also traveled well in the car.
