Meet Walker, a handsome and fluffy Golden Retriever mix with a heart of gold and a playful spirit! At about 1 year and 5 months old and weighing 74lbs, Walker is a joy to be around. He loves to relax with a good "sploot" on cool surfaces and has a blast playing and rolling in the dirt. His previous owner shared that Walker is a well-behaved boy who is already potty trained, knows his basic commands, and is crate-trained. He enjoys car rides and is a loyal companion who will happily follow you around the house.
Ideal Home
Walker would thrive in a home with a dedicated, dog-savvy owner who can provide him with clear boundaries and positive guidance. Due to past experiences, Walker needs to be the only pet in the household and is not suitable for homes with cats, as he has a history of chasing and reacting to them. He is also looking for an adults-only household, as he is uncomfortable around children.
Ongoing Health
Walker has a history of resource guarding and defensive reactions to certain types of handling. He also shows signs of separation anxiety.
Training & Support
Walker has a bite history, stemming from an incident where he redirected onto his owner while trying to stop him from chasing a cat. He has developed negative reactions to being handled by the scruff or collar, which was used as a form of discipline by his previous owner. He will benefit from a predictable routine and requires an experienced owner who will use alternative management tools instead of collar-grabbing and focus on structured, positive-reinforcement training. It's crucial to respect his warning signals, such as lip lifting, low growls, or stiffening, by creating distance and redirecting his focus. Avoid petting him while he's sleeping, grabbing his collar or body, picking him up, or forcing grooming during his decompression period. Allow him at least two weeks to settle in and approach you for attention.
