Gertie is a approximately 3-4 year old female who has had a very tough start to life. She was abandoned as a puppy and endured significant abuse and neglect on the streets for two years before being hit by a car. Thankfully, a kind senior couple stopped to help, and she was taken to a vet. Despite animal control's recommendation for euthanasia, the veterinarian stepped in, performed surgery to repair her broken pelvis and leg, spayed her, and nursed her back to health over several months. She made some progress, but the busy clinic environment was too much for her, and she came to us for further rehabilitation. While she's come a long way, Gertie still requires immense patience, dedication, and one-on-one attention to continue building her trust. She is not a dog who will ever be able to be let off-leash in an unfenced area, as she will run and cannot be caught. This is a non-negotiable requirement. Gertie does not show any signs of aggression; her instinct is to retreat. She will take treats from your hand and allows petting from the one person she trusts. She will use a designated, fenced area of the yard for potty breaks and then return to the door.
Ideal Home
Gertie needs a quiet, predictable environment. She would do best with a single person or a couple who are home a significant portion of the day, or work from home. Children, especially toddlers, are too much for her due to their unpredictable nature and noise. She absolutely must have a securely fenced yard, and will always need to be walked on a leash. Gertie would thrive in a home with no other pets, where she can be the sole focus of your love and healing efforts.
Ongoing Health
Gertie had surgery for a broken pelvis and leg, and was spayed. She is otherwise healthy.
Training & Support
Gertie is a very fearful dog who does not trust easily. Her primary need is for a patient owner who can dedicate significant time to helping her build confidence and learn to trust. She needs consistent positive reinforcement and a predictable routine.
