Gretel is a loving and happy pup once she trusts. She's an extremely smart girl who learns quickly with repetition and knows "sit," "down," and "wait." She's also working on recall with a hand-to-nose touch. Gretel loves treats and responds well to frequent, short training sessions. She's slowly learning to play with toys and other dogs, and her drive to please and overcome her fears is immense. However, she is very timid and shy, with many fears that require time and patience to overcome. She's gradually learning to be part of a family, and her trust grows each day, though meeting new people is still a challenge. She gets along well with other dogs and often follows their lead. Gretel is fully house-trained and retreats to a quiet spot when nervous.
Ideal Home
Gretel would thrive in a quieter home environment. While other well-behaved dogs are okay, her ideal home will have someone patient who allows her to progress at her own speed, offering gentle encouragement when she's ready, otherwise she may shut down. She has learned to accept being touched and enjoys ear scratches and belly rubs.
Ongoing Health
Gretel will receive a full medical assessment before leaving Cortez Rescue to ensure she remains in optimum health.
Training & Support
Gretel is still learning to navigate the world and can be startled by noises, people, and wind. She will bolt if afraid, so a secure environment is important. She can now be leashed and harnessed and walks well in quiet areas, but is not yet comfortable with roadways or traffic. She walks well with other dogs, but quiet surroundings are necessary for her walks.
