About Special Circumstances Adoption - Mel, Dana, and Abbot

Mel, Dana, and Abbot are a trio of sweet souls who have experienced a difficult start in life. Coming from situations where human interaction was frightening or non-existent, they are now ready for a very special kind of home. These dogs are deeply traumatized, fearful, and can be quite antisocial. Their journey to trust will require immense patience, a calm environment, and very low expectations from their adopters. They often thrive with the companionship of other confident dogs, as this helps them learn the rhythms of a home and observe human life from a safe distance. Adopters should be prepared for a journey that may take months, with significant time potentially needed for house training. Some may never become overtly social, and pushing interaction too quickly can lead to setbacks. The ultimate goal is to allow them to feel safe and secure until they are ready to trust. The reward for this dedication is a profound and deeply fulfilling bond.

Ideal Home

A calm home with other confident dogs is ideal. Adopters must be patient humans who understand trauma, respect boundaries, and are willing to move at the dog's pace, allowing them space to observe without pressure.

Ongoing Health

All core vaccines, rabies vaccine (age-dependent), 4DX test for heartworm & tick-borne diseases (age-dependent), flea, tick & heartworm prevention, parasite treatment, and dental surgery if recommended by veterinary partners (for adult/senior dogs) are included.

Training & Support

These dogs require significant patience and understanding. Progress may take months, and house training can take a considerable amount of time. Pushing interaction too quickly can cause setbacks, fear biting, or complete shutdown. Adopters should be prepared to "pretend they aren't there" initially, allowing the dogs to observe humans without pressure. A session with a positive-reinforcement trainer and ongoing support from the sanctuary team are provided.
