About Odie

Hi, I'm Odie! I'm a 4-year-old, 65-pound black Rottweiler mix with a heart full of love to give, even though my life started out a bit rough. I was found on the side of the road as a tiny puppy, and while my siblings found homes, I stayed with the person who loved me most. That early experience has left me with some anxiety and fear, but I'm working hard every day to overcome it. I'm a playful, smart boy who knows commands like "sit," "speak," and "shake," and I truly want to please my people!

Ideal Home

I'm looking for a home with an experienced dog owner who is patient, steady, and confident. Someone who understands fear-based behaviors and can set clear boundaries while still being gentle. I'm not a match for a timid handler or a first-time dog owner. I need someone who will help me feel safe, not overwhelmed. Ideally, my new home would have older, dog-savvy children (14 and up) and no cats. While I did well when boarded with other dogs, I haven't lived with them before, so a dog-free household might be best for now. I also struggle with crates, so a home where I don't need to be crated would be wonderful.

Ongoing Health

I'm neutered and house-trained. To help manage my anxiety, I'm currently on Reconcile, and being neutered has also been beneficial. I can be protective of my people, especially my mom, and may bark or growl at strangers. My anxiety can also lead to destructive behaviors, like getting into the trash or chewing on objects, especially when I'm feeling overwhelmed. I had a single bite incident when my owner was pulling me away from the screen door as I was barking at the mailman, and I redirected and bit her hand. I would benefit from training to help me feel more relaxed around strangers and learn that I don't need to defend the household.

Training & Support

I'm still learning how to cope with my anxiety. When I'm left alone, I do best when I have access to just one room, and my previous family even used a baby monitor to talk to me and help me feel safe. I need someone who can provide me with consistent structure and build my confidence. Training to help me relax around strangers is a priority.
