Gretel is a loving and happy pup once she trusts. She is an extremely smart girl and learns quickly with repetition. Gretel knows sit, down, and wait, and is learning recall. She loves her treats and responds well to frequent, short training sessions with high-value rewards. She is slowly learning to play with toys and other dogs, responding with excitement to repeated positive experiences. Gretel is timid and shy, with many fears that require time and patience to overcome. She is slowly learning to become part of a family, and her trust has grown each day, though meeting new people is still a difficult process. She gets along well with other dogs and often follows their lead. Gretel is fully house-trained and will retreat to her quiet spot when nervous or afraid. She has learned to allow petting and loves ear scratches and belly rubs. Gretel will now accept a leash and harness and will walk in quiet areas, but is often startled by noises, people, and wind, looking to retreat home. She walks well with other pups, but quiet surroundings are necessary. She will not yet walk by roadways with traffic and noise, and will bolt if afraid.
Ideal Home
Gretel requires a home on the quieter side. Other pups are okay and would be beneficial to her confidence. She needs someone willing to let her advance at her own speed with gentle encouragement when she is ready; otherwise, she may shut down.
Ongoing Health
Before leaving Cortez Rescue, Gretel will be given a full medical assessment to ensure she remains in optimum health.
Training & Support
Gretel is learning to trust and overcome her fears at her own pace. Consistent, positive reinforcement and short training sessions will help her continue to grow. She will need continued support with leash walking in more stimulating environments.
