About Mango
Meet Mango! She's a real peach!
Mango is a very sweet and sensitive 6-year-old Golden Retriever who spent the first 6 years of her life as a breeding dog at a puppy mill. This environment has left her sensitive to loud noises and fast movements, but her curiosity often wins out over her fear. She's looking for a patient and loving family to help her continue learning about the world and build her confidence. She's a joy to foster, loves meeting new people, and will seek out attention. While she's timid at first, she quickly warms up and demands attention. She enjoys meeting other dogs, though she can sometimes come on too strong and may need gentle correction on proper dog manners. Mango is curious but needs a little encouragement to explore her surroundings. She's still figuring out toys and tends to interact with them when she's alone. When in a new environment, she carries a stuffy to ease her anxiety, but once comfortable, she doesn't pay much attention to it. Mango isn't interested in stealing shoes or clothing; her primary interest is stealing your attention!
She absolutely loves her walks, which have become her favorite part of the day. She prefers a slow, meandering pace to sniff and explore. Mango loves to be close to her foster mom and can be demanding of attention, so she'll need clear boundaries to help build her confidence. She's pushing through her fears and embracing her new world; she's a brave girl with a big heart!
Mango's crate training has been a journey. She prefers a crate that's just her size and will go right in once she's comfortable. Getting her out of her crate requires some coaxing, and she might return if she's feeling uncomfortable. She prefers to be out of her crate when her people are home and is fine being crated while you're at work, but she'd prefer not to be left for a full workday. Someone who can come home at lunchtime or people with opposite schedules would be ideal. Mango isn't a big eater and prefers to eat alone, so leaving food in her crate or a designated spot will help ensure she eats.
Ideal Home
Mango would do best in an adult-only home or one with gentle teens who can be sensitive to her fears and patient as she adjusts. She needs to be the only dog in the home, as she likes to be the center of attention. While she hasn't been exposed to cats, she shows interest in chasing squirrels, so it's best she remains the only pet. This sweet girl won't be suited for a first-time dog owner, but for those experienced with dogs, who love Goldens, and have the patience and care to give this mature girl a loving retirement home, she will be a joy.
Ongoing Health
Mango is spayed and up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped.
Training & Support
Mango is still learning how to play with toys. She can sometimes be unsure of people behind her and may need reassurance. She has her peculiarities, sometimes seeking attention and other times preferring to be left undisturbed. Her house training has gone very well with zero accidents, but expect some regression in a new home. Her crate training is ongoing, but she is doing well. Mango needs clear boundaries set to help continue building her confidence. Traditional training methods haven't been as successful, but other methods have worked well.
