Peter is an approximately 1-year-old Australian Shepherd mix with a personality as big as his heart. This goofy, loving boy has never met a stranger and seems convinced that everyone he meets is his new best friend. Peter loves people, enjoys playing with other dogs, and desperately wishes every cat would be his friend too. While cats may not always appreciate his enthusiasm, he has shown no aggression whatsoever and simply wants to play. He is a happy, energetic dog who loves being involved in whatever his people are doing. Peter's foster describes him as goofy, loving, playful, and energetic. He has so much love to give and is ready to find a family that will embrace everything that makes him special.
Ideal Home
Peter does great with children, though because he's a larger, enthusiastic dog who can get excited and jump, he may do best with children over the age of six simply so he doesn't accidentally knock over a smaller child while trying to say hello. Because Peter is deaf, a securely fenced yard is required. Since he cannot hear commands, traffic, or other dangers, having a safe place to run and burn off energy is important.
Ongoing Health
Peter is mildly sight impaired. He can see well enough to navigate his surroundings, recognize where his people are, and learn hand signals, but bright sunlight can bother his eyes and his depth perception is slightly off. It doesn't slow him down or keep him from enjoying life—he simply experiences the world a little differently. Peter is neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, on monthly preventative, dewormed, and microchipped.
Training & Support
As a deaf dog, Peter communicates a little differently, but he is smart, eager to learn, and has already shown how well he can adapt with positive reinforcement and patience. He is crate trained and doing well with potty training when kept on a consistent routine. He walks nicely on a leash and already knows how to sit using sign language, especially when treats are involved. Peter is looking for a family willing to continue working with him using visual cues and positive reinforcement.
