About Poco
Poco is a charming 6-year-old male Chihuahua, weighing in at a dainty 6lbs. With his sweet face and cream-colored coat, he's sure to capture your heart. Poco came to us from a pound in Quebec, having been surrendered by his previous owner. Initially, he was quite nervous and withdrawn, likely due to a lack of exposure to the world and opportunities to build confidence. His foster family has been dedicated to helping him blossom, and he's transformed into a confident and adventurous gentleman! He used to be very anxious when left alone, but now he's content to nap in his dog bed and settles well in his crate after a moment or two. It will be important for his forever family to continue supporting his independence and crate training. Poco is a pro at leash walking and enjoys exploring local trails and dog-friendly establishments. He knows basic commands like "sit" and "stay," and surprisingly, some in French too! While he's house-trained, he's accustomed to using pee pads during winter, so his new family should be mindful and provide plenty of opportunities for outdoor potty breaks to reinforce good habits. He's up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, and has received flea and heartworm prevention. He was neutered upon arrival and, aside from minor dental plaque, has no other health concerns. Poco has lived happily with other small dogs and shows no signs of resource guarding. He's beginning to show interest in playing with his foster siblings and toys, which is wonderful to see! His appetite has been a journey, and while he's eating kibble well now, he might regress slightly in a new environment. Training has primarily involved positive touch and verbal praise, as he hasn't been motivated by treats. He's accustomed to being alone for 2-4 hours a day and would benefit from continuing this routine. We don't anticipate issues with cats, and given his size and past, a home with children aged 8 and up would be ideal. Poco is considered a flight risk in a new home until he adjusts, so secure doors and fences are a must. He's been an absolute delight to foster, and we can't wait for him to find his perfect match to continue his exciting new adventures!
Ideal Home
Poco would thrive in a home with older children (ages 8 and up) and a secure outdoor space for potty breaks. He is considered a flight risk in a new home, so secure doors and fences are a must.
Ongoing Health
Poco is up-to-date on all vaccinations and has been microchipped. He was neutered upon arrival. Aside from minor plaque on his teeth, he has no current health concerns. He is on flea and heartworm prevention.
Training & Support
Poco is house-trained but may need reinforcement to exclusively use the outdoors for his business. He is working on his independence and crate training, which should be continued in his new home. Training has focused on positive touch and verbal affirmation due to his lack of interest in treats.
