Gretel is a loving and happy pup once she trusts! She's an extremely smart girl who learns quickly with repetition. Gretel knows sit, down, and wait, and is currently working on recall with a hand-to-nose touch. She absolutely loves her treats and responds well to frequent, short training sessions with high-value rewards. Gretel is slowly learning to play with toys and other dogs. She gets excited by repeated positive experiences, but it takes her time to get there. Her drive to please and overcome her fears is immense, and she must approach new things at her own pace to build trust and learn positively.
Gretel is an extremely timid and shy girl with many fears. She requires time and patience to overcome them. She's slowly learning to become part of a family and all that entails. While her trust has grown each day, meeting new people is still a difficult process for her. She gets along well with other dogs and often follows their lead. Gretel is fully house-trained and will retreat to her quiet spot if she's feeling nervous or afraid. She has learned to accept being touched and loves ear scratches and belly rubs. Gretel is now comfortable with a leash and harness and will walk in quiet areas. However, she is often startled by noises, people, and wind, and looks to retreat home. She walks well with other dogs, but quiet environments are essential. She will not yet walk near roadways with traffic and noise and will bolt if she feels afraid.
Ideal Home
Gretel requires a home on the quieter side. Other well-behaved dogs are okay and would be beneficial. Her ideal family will be willing to let her advance at her own speed, offering gentle encouragement when she's ready, as pushing her too quickly can cause her to shut down.
Ongoing Health
Before leaving Cortez Rescue, Gretel will be given a full medical assessment to ensure she remains in optimum health.
Training & Support
Gretel is a work in progress and needs a patient owner to help her build confidence. Focus on positive reinforcement and positive experiences. Avoid overwhelming her with too many new things at once.
