Armor is a charming 8-year-old male German Shepherd who has made incredible strides since arriving in our care. He came to us emaciated and frightened, but with love, patience, and consistent attention, he has transformed into a goofy, affectionate, and people-loving companion. He's now ready to find his forever home and is seeking a calm, stable foster or foster-to-adopt family.
Armor is currently heartworm positive and will begin treatment soon. Because this treatment can be stressful, we're eager to get him into a foster home before his treatment begins, ideally before June 12th. Foster-to-adopt is also an option, with finalization after his treatment is complete, a process that takes about two months.
He has become very people-friendly and understands that humans can be safe and kind. Armor is affectionate, enjoys playtime, and can be quite goofy, leaning into people for attention and happily engaging once he trusts you. He's highly motivated by food and responds wonderfully to positive reinforcement.
Armor has shown excellent resourcefulness with people. We've been able to safely handle his food bowl while he's eating, and he's even tolerated the removal of high-value items like rawhide. While he initially gave polite warning sounds, he has improved significantly, learning to disengage rather than escalate when a valued item is taken, demonstrating respectful communication and boundaries.
Behaviorally, Armor appears to do best as the only dog. Due to his past experiences, he would thrive in a home without other pets, where he can decompress and build confidence without any pressure. He seems to be fully house-trained and maintains good kennel habits. Armor is a deeply rewarding dog who has blossomed from fearful to affectionate and playful. He's now looking for a home that can continue his healing journey with structure, calm leadership, and patience.
Ideal Home
Armor would do best in a calm, dog-free home with an adult-focused or low-traffic environment. An experienced or patient individual with large breed shepherds is preferred. A willingness to support him through his heartworm treatment, with clinic guidance provided, is essential.
Ongoing Health
Armor is currently heartworm positive and will begin treatment, with his first injection scheduled before June 12th. The shelter will cover all costs associated with his treatment.
Training & Support
Armor is highly food motivated and responsive to positive interaction. He has learned to respect boundaries and disengage from potentially escalating situations. Continued calm leadership and patience will be key to his ongoing success.
