Smoke is an incredibly sweet, approximately 5-year-old male pit bull who is looking for a loving home or a rescue partner to help him manage his significant, but treatable, medical needs. He is currently suffering from severe allergic dermatitis, which has resulted in diffuse yeast and bacterial skin infections, severe ear infections, and conjunctivitis. His ears are so uncomfortable that constant head shaking has led to bleeding ear tips. Despite these challenges, Smoke remains exceptionally kind and cooperative, showing no medical reactivity during handling or treatment. He knows "sit" and has maintained a low Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS) score since intake, proving his sweet temperament shines through even while dealing with discomfort.
Ideal Home
Smoke would thrive in a home or foster setting where he can receive consistent medical care and a stable environment. Dogs with advanced allergic skin disease struggle in shelters, so a dedicated home is ideal for monitoring his response to treatment and reducing exposure to potential triggers.
Ongoing Health
Smoke has severe allergic dermatitis, likely related to fleas, food allergies, environmental allergies, or a combination of factors. This has led to skin and ear infections, and conjunctivitis. He is currently being treated with antimicrobials and anti-inflammatory medications, and will require long-term management. He benefits from routine medicated baths/mousses and frequent ear flushing. A controlled therapeutic diet trial under veterinary supervision is recommended to identify possible food allergies. Long-term management may include medications like Zenrelia or Atopica. He also has mild dental disease requiring a cleaning and evaluation under anesthesia. Smoke has entropion (eyelids rolled in), and it's unclear if this is related to his dermatitis or a primary issue that may require surgical correction in the future.
Training & Support
Smoke knows "sit" and has shown no medical reactivity. His ongoing health needs will require consistent support and management.
