Chance is a 4-5 year old male Basenji mix who was found living on the streets close to three years ago. He is smart, quirky, independent, and highly athletic. He came into a high kill shelter as a stray with no owner reclaiming him. He was broken, scared, hated humans, and seemed feral. He was set to be put down to free up space. He was with one foster and made great strides. He was then adopted and returned after a year because his family moved and didn't take him. Chance is currently with an amazing permanent foster and is being set up for success for his special furever family.
At first, Chance didn't allow anyone to pet him and he hasn't really had a leash on him in two years. He had one on and he chewed it off. He has made incredible progress in his current foster home, where he's been for less than three months. He now asks for cuddles daily and receives human-initiated contact sporadically. Every day, he gets more trusting and playful. He is a very courageous boy, but still, no leash yet.
Ideal Home
Chance will thrive in a home with other dogs, a backyard, high fences, and a family that can commit to doing the work of earning his trust. He is a loyal companion that is ready to be loved unconditionally.
Ongoing Health
No specific health conditions were mentioned in the listing.
Training & Support
Chance is potty and crate trained and should be crated when no human is home. He can be guarded over food and is very food-motivated. He prefers to eat his food in his crate with the door closed and a blanket draped over the top. He is learning so much about trusting touch and teaching his foster family so much about patience and true consent. When a leash can be put on him, he will make a great dog for anyone wanting to try agility training and play.
