Meet Iris! This sweet 3.5-year-old Shepherd/Black Mouth Cur mix is ready to find her forever home. Iris is fully vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed, weighing in at a compact 47 pounds. She was rescued from a high-kill shelter in Texas along with her siblings and has been patiently waiting for her turn to shine. Iris is goofy, playful, affectionate, and genuinely sweet, though she's a bit selective about who gets to see that side of her. She truly blossoms with people she trusts, becoming incredibly loyal and loving.
Ideal Home
Iris would be a dream for someone working from home, but she'd thrive best in a quieter environment, perhaps with access to trails or open space, away from the hustle and bustle of city streets. She is best suited for an adult-only home, as the unpredictable energy of young children can be overwhelming for her. Iris is dog-selective and prefers slow, intentional introductions. While she can learn to coexist and even play with other dogs with careful management (keeping food and toys separate during playtime), she does exhibit some food and resource guarding behaviors towards them.
Ongoing Health
Iris is healthy and up-to-date on all her vaccinations, microchipped, and spayed.
Training & Support
Iris is fully potty trained and crate trained, seeing her crate as a sanctuary. She walks well on leash for shorter distances, though she can be reactive to other dogs that get too close on the same side of the street, requiring an owner who can create distance and set her up for success. Iris exhibits some food and resource guarding behaviors towards other dogs, which is manageable with separate feeding. She is described as having a moderate and wonderfully balanced energy level, enjoying walks but also happy to relax. Her reactivity is rooted in fear, and she requires slow, low-pressure introductions to build trust and confidence. She is not a difficult dog, but one that needs patience and understanding to meet her where she is.
