Omen

Omen is a 6-year-old mixed breed with a heart of gold and a spirit of a champion. He was surrendered to a shelter in Canada for reasons unknown, and when he arrived, he was having significant difficulty breathing due to a condition called Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome, which involved a very narrow airway and an elongated palate. To help him breathe easier, Omen underwent surgery on March 23rd to correct these issues. He also had 20 teeth removed due to severe periodontal disease and was cryptorchid, requiring a more extensive neuter surgery. Thankfully, Omen is recovering wonderfully from all his procedures. You may also know him by his original name, Caesar, which we learned from his microchip. This resilient little guy weighs about 22 pounds and has a gentle, loving nature. Omen is currently eating Tom & Sawyer Fresh Prepared Cooked dog food, which is soft and suitable for his post-surgery needs. The wonderful folks at Tom & Sawyer have generously offered a lifetime 30% discount on his food for his adopter. Omen truly cherishes human companionship and would do best in a home where someone is present most of the time or has the option to bring him to work, as he could develop separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods. While he hasn't shown signs of separation anxiety yet, his foster family is home frequently and has had success leaving him for short errands. Omen is a social butterfly and gets along wonderfully with dogs, cats, and children. He is a true survivor who has also overcome cancer, with it being caught and treated very early. We are incredibly optimistic about his long-term prognosis and his potential to live a very full and happy life. Omen is, quite simply, an amazing little dog.

Ideal Home

Omen thrives on companionship and would do best in a home where someone is around most of the time. He is good with dogs, cats, and children.

Ongoing Health

Omen has undergone significant medical procedures, including surgery for Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome, dental extractions, a cryptorchid neuter, and the removal of a mast cell tumor. He had surgery on March 23rd for his airway and dental issues, and on April 29th for the tumor, which included the extraction of additional teeth. Pathology reports indicated narrow margins on the tumor removal and an elevated mitotic count, suggesting a potential for recurrence. However, there is no evidence of cancer spread to his lymph nodes, liver, or spleen. He will be seeing an oncologist for a treatment plan. He is currently on a soft food diet and will continue to require monitoring for his health conditions.

Training & Support

Omen is a quick learner and responds well to positive reinforcement. He is food-motivated and eager to please. He has learned basic commands like "sit," "in" (for his crate), and "wait." He is house-trained and has established a good routine, now indicating when he needs to go outside. On walks, he enjoys exploring but may occasionally need gentle encouragement to continue if he decides it's time to head home. He is still building confidence with stairs, and carpeted stairs are preferred.
