Hershey is a sweet 7 to 8-year-old Great Dane who is learning to trust and enjoy life after a difficult start. She came into rescue alongside another senior dog, Shaggy, and is currently being fostered in Pace, Florida. After years of living outdoors and being used for breeding, Hershey is still working through the physical and emotional effects of her past. She needs a calm, patient, and understanding home where she can continue to feel safe and settled.
Hershey can be unsure of new people initially, so slow introductions are key. Once she trusts you, she is incredibly affectionate and will lean against you for comfort. She has done well with other dogs of various temperaments and sizes in her foster home, but proper introductions are essential. She has also shown no issues with livestock like goats, pigs, and cows. While she will chase outdoor cats, she responds well to corrections. Hershey is an anxious dog who can become uncomfortable with too much excitement or close quarters. She needs an adopter who understands and respects her boundaries, especially at the vet.
Ideal Home
Hershey would thrive in a calm, low-traffic home with a patient adopter who understands that building trust takes time. A quieter environment with less constant activity will help her feel secure. She can live with other well-balanced dogs, provided introductions are slow and thoughtful.
Ongoing Health
Years of living on hard surfaces and multiple litters have taken a toll on Hershey's body, so she does best with short walks and a relaxed lifestyle. She recently underwent a spay surgery and is recovering well. She was previously underweight at 75 pounds but is now a healthy 130 pounds.
Training & Support
Hershey is crate trained and knows "kennel up." She is making progress with potty training and is starting to signal when she needs to go outside. She has excellent nighttime habits and prefers to sleep in the bed with her person. She is not destructive when supervised and has never been known to get into things. When left alone, she does best with access to a secure indoor and outdoor space. Due to her history of food aggression from being severely underweight, Hershey must be fed separately. Experience with large breeds or anxious dogs is a plus.
