Shuman is a 2-year-old male Border Collie mix who came to us as a stray from a rural California shelter. He was initially very nervous and unsure of people, but has blossomed in foster care. Shuman is a smart and active boy who thrives on engagement and purpose. He loves to play fetch, go on adventures, and be included in his family's daily life. While he can be shy with new people, he warms up with slow, thoughtful introductions. Shuman is neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations.
Ideal Home
Shuman needs an experienced, patient handler who can commit to building trust with him. A fully secured yard is essential, as he may try to escape if frightened. An active lifestyle is a must, and a well-socialized resident dog would be a wonderful bonus to help him continue building confidence. He is not suited for homes with cats, chickens, or other small animals. Children over 8 years old may be okay, but Shuman's herding instincts could be an issue, so careful supervision is needed.
Ongoing Health
Shuman is neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations and flea/heartworm prevention.
Training & Support
Shuman is crate-trained and knows basic commands like "Sit," "Down," and "Leave-it." He is working on "Stay" and waiting at thresholds. He occasionally chews on things, but takes redirection well. He can be fearful of loud noises and quick movements, and will seek a hiding place when scared. He is also afraid of quick movements, especially those involving people's feet. He needs to be kept on a leash for the first few weeks in a new home, even in a fenced yard, for safety.
