About Gretel

Gretel is a loving and happy pup once she trusts. She's an extremely smart girl who learns quickly with repetition and already knows "sit," "down," and "wait." She's also learning recall with a hand-to-nose touch, responding well to high-value treats during short, frequent training sessions. Gretel is slowly warming up to toys and other dogs, showing excitement with repeated positive experiences. Her drive to please and overcome her fears is immense, but she needs to learn and trust at her own pace.

Gretel is a timid and shy girl with many fears, requiring patience and understanding to overcome them. She's gradually becoming part of a family, and her trust grows daily, though meeting new people remains a challenge. She gets along well with other dogs and often follows their lead. Gretel is fully house-trained and will retreat to a quiet spot when feeling nervous.

Ideal Home

Gretel would thrive in a quiet home environment. Other dogs are welcome and would be beneficial. Her ideal family will be patient and allow her to advance at her own speed, offering gentle encouragement when she's ready, to avoid her shutting down.

Ongoing Health

Gretel will receive a full medical assessment before leaving Cortez Rescue to ensure she remains in optimum health.

Training & Support

Gretel is learning to accept being touched and enjoys ear scratches and belly rubs. She is now comfortable with a leash and harness and will walk in quiet areas. However, she can be easily startled by noises, people, and wind, and will look to retreat home. She walks well with other dogs, but quiet surroundings are essential. She is not yet comfortable walking near roadways with traffic and noise, and she will bolt if frightened.
