Persephone is a silly, playful, and snuggly 3-year-old Berndadoodle weighing in at 45lbs. She's a gorgeous tri-color girl who was unfortunately used for breeding in a puppy mill. While she can be a happy-go-lucky dog, her past has left her with some fear responses, and she can be sound reactive, often seeming like she's in trouble for just being a dog. Persephone needs a quiet home and ongoing training to build her confidence. She loves her stuffies and can often be found doing "laps" with one in her mouth, sometimes even while going potty outside! When she's not playing, she's snuggling up on the couch with her foster family or their Bernese. She's house-trained and does well in her crate at night, though she does sometimes grab non-toy items when unsupervised, so crating is necessary when she can't be watched. She's also a good traveler and enjoys car rides.
Ideal Home
Persephone needs a securely fenced backyard and at least an hour of walking per day. She's nervous around new people on leash and doesn't do well in crowded or noisy environments, so a generally quiet home is essential. She can only go to an adult-only home or one with calm, quiet teens. She does not do well with loud voices or sudden movements and would be too startling for younger children. Even visiting young children could be too much for her.
Ongoing Health
Persephone has been diagnosed with Lyme disease, contracted due to not being on preventative medication while in the mill. Fortunately, she is currently asymptomatic and managing well. She does not require medication at this time, and our vet team has confirmed she is otherwise healthy. Her protein levels are normal, and she is cleared for adoption. She does have some chipped teeth from her time in the mill that may require future dental work and cleanings as she ages, but they do not require immediate attention.
Training & Support
Persephone is working on her "come" and "leave it" commands and has made excellent progress with loose-leash walking, though she can still get excited by squirrels or other dogs and may pull slightly before being redirected. She needs ongoing training to build her confidence. Because she is still a flight risk and can be impulsive, it is necessary to supervise her outside of her crate to prevent her from chewing on inappropriate items like remotes or shoes.
