Honey is a precious 4-year-old Cocker Spaniel who arrived with paralysis in her hind legs. This condition developed about two months before coming to rescue, and she has been unable to use her back legs since. Honey also has a history of seizures, but they are well-controlled with medication, and she has been seizure-free for a year.
A neurology consultation confirmed that Honey is paralyzed and has no feeling in her hind limbs or tail, likely due to a spinal cord injury from a slipped disc. While her ability to walk again is unlikely due to the loss of sensation in her hind limbs, the focus is now on providing her with a great quality of life. She will be fitted for a custom wheelchair to help her move around, and maintaining her front leg strength will be important. Her fosters are currently using a wagon to help her move longer distances.
Honey is currently being treated for a bladder infection with antibiotics. She has also started thyroid therapy after her levels were found to be very low. Once these health issues are resolved and her thyroid levels are regulated, she is expected to feel much better. She is already showing improvement in her appetite and is receiving subcutaneous fluids daily to aid in rehydration. Honey is a loving, alert, and aware dog who is adjusting well to her foster home and gets along with the other dogs and cats.
