Niko Bear looks like a tough guy, but underneath that rugged exterior is one of the sweetest, gentlest souls you'll ever meet. He's basically a teddy bear disguised as a tough guy! This handsome fellow is approximately 4 years old and weighs around 74 lbs. We believe he may be a Pittie/Shepherd mix, but with rescue, breed and age are always a mystery. What we do know is that his sleek black coat, soulful eyes, and ruggedly handsome face make a striking first impression, and his personality is even better.
Niko is the definition of a gentle giant. He has a calm, easygoing nature and is perfectly content moseying through life at his own pace, finding a comfy spot to relax, and enjoying the company of his people. He can take a minute to warm up to new people, but once he does, he'll quietly lean his whole body weight into you for affection. He's also dog-friendly and has done well with every dog he's met, from confident males to easygoing personalities. He even met a cat named Biggie and was very respectful. Niko is potty trained and has wonderful house manners, and while he's still building confidence with his crate, he's improving daily and is not destructive. He's not the type that needs a lot of exercise, but he does enjoy being outside moseying around the yard and taking in the fresh air.
Ideal Home
Niko would be happiest in a home with a backyard. We believe he would do best with another dog that shares his outlook on life – one that enjoys companionship without needing a full-time playmate and appreciates hanging out together while each doing their own thing. We can arrange for Niko to have a sleepover with a cat upon request if you have one.
Ongoing Health
Niko is up-to-date on all his vetting, which includes DAPP vaccine with booster, Bordetella, Rabies vaccine, multiple broad-spectrum deworming treatments, flea prevention, and a 12-month heartworm preventative injectable. He has also tested negative for heartworm.
Training & Support
Niko is working on his leash skills and is getting more comfortable with a leash. He is also building confidence with his crate.

Transporation
Niko is currently located in Texas. We facilitate adoptions nationwide using our rescue-run, USDA-certified transport system. Our transport includes drop-off locations in WA, UT, OR, ID, VA, PA, OH, NY, CT, VT, TN, KY, WI, MN, IL, WI, and Canada (with pick-up options in Bellingham, WA, Buffalo, NY, or Brattleboro, VT for Canadian adopters).
