Meet the breeder
Meet Jean LaGrone - Houston Scotties. I, Jean LaGrone, am from Texas and breed only Scottish Terriers. I have been a proud owner of Scottish Terriers since 1968. It is the only dog that I have ever owned. Though I had a litter of scottie puppies in 1970, I have been actively breeding since 2014. I currently own 3 females and 1 male, all of which, including puppies, are pets living in my home. My females and my male have been DNA tested and cleared of genetic disorders, and neither my dogs, nor my puppies have ever suffered from skin allergies or serious medical disorders, such as cancer. Recommendations: Use of Victor Hi Pro-Plus Dog Food, of which protein is 88% meat and includes Omega 6 and Omega 3, is important in the development of bones and muscles necessary to support scotties' stocky bodies, as well as maintenance of non-shedding hair. Harnesses help secure Scotties when walking as their large head can slip out of a collar. Always seat belt your beloved pet using a harness when riding in vehicle. Avoid plastic feeding dishes; glass, stainless steel, porcelain, even safe kitchen dishware/cookware make good pet dishes. Other concerns to watch for are dog food from China, certain treats, such as rawhide, and toys that might be might possess carcinogens, as plactic is a petroleum product. Hollow toys are hazardous, as chewed off pieces can cause obstructions. Solid rubber balls are excellent; Kong makes great balls. Discard all damaged toys. Pesticides are harmful, as pets lick feet. When using pesticides, fence off treated areas. Washing or wiping feet with baby wipes helps keep feet clean from any possible contamination from pesticides if you walk your scottie, especially if your 4 legged friend is licking feet. Long nails and paw pad hairs can cause walking problems, feet pain that can lead to feet licking. Many vegetables make great treats and are healthy for all dogs. If in doubt about material safety, use a lead test strip. Because of skin lotions and creams, it is important that puppies not be allowed to lick our skin, including a puppy's favorite lick spot, the chin. Helpful "potty" training hints: keep bedding, toys, play area and "dirty" feet clean. This helps train the pup to training paper by keeping the scent only on the paper. When the scent is elsewhere, it distracts the puppy from the intended "potty" area. Feet should be washed often as they are wet with pee or the poo that has been stepped in. If scratchy after grooming or bathing, be sure that all cut hair and shampoo is thoroughly rinsed off; hair/scap conditioner for sensitive skin might also be helpful. To reduce accidents, puppies are put back in the puppy play pen often when they have been out playing with family members. This gives them a chance for drink and peeing. Door knob bells and timers can help with house training. Healthy Skin: Though skin issues can be related to allergies to food and grass, there may be other causes: 1) Bug bites such as misquitoes, gnats and ants will cause itching and scratching. Yards can be treated with pet/child safe chemicals, though should be allowed to dry before exposure. Additional safety measures include watering down the following day, then again allowing to dry. Other ant treatment include borac acid/sugar/water paste on waffle placed in plastic container with a hole in the lid for ants to enter. This not only kills ants immediately, but some ants will take waffle pieces back to nest, killing all ants. Misquitoes may be reduced by putting a Misquito Dunk in milk carton of water. Misquitoes will lay eggs here and mixtures kills both. Containers should be pet proof and/or out of reach of pets. 2) Indoor and outdoor household chemicals can lead to feet licking. Outdoor chemicals can be washed off feet using a water hose or small plastic tub of water before entering house. Vinegar is a safe indoor cleaner. Itching can be reduced using a pain or itch relief spray, as well as a hair scalp conditioner. A soft stretchy pet surgical suit will protect skin from persistent scratching and allow time to heal. Long toe nails and long feet/paw hair can also cause feet licking. Keep trim to prevent licking. Great vitamins for skin and general health are NuVet Plus, which is high in Vitamin A, and Nutri Vet Fish Oil.
