Meet Haywood! This adorable, approximately 1-year-old Shih Tzu mix weighs 9 pounds and is already at his full grown size. Haywood came to us in rough shape, severely matted and covered in fleas. Thanks to the amazing grooming services of Amy at Pawpular Pets, he's now a whole new, handsome dog!
Haywood was understandably terrified after his neglect and abandonment, showing some initial fear and growling. However, once he felt safe and out of his kennel, his true, happy, and friendly personality emerged. He takes a little time to warm up to new people, wanting to ensure they are safe, but once he trusts you, he'll be your best friend!
Ideal Home
Haywood would do best in a home with older children who are respectful and understand not to treat him like a toy. He has shown he can do well with other dogs of all sizes, but he also wouldn't mind being the only dog in the household. We're unsure how he'd do with cats but suspect he'd be just fine. He has a lower energy level currently, but this might increase as he settles in.
Ongoing Health
Haywood is heartworm negative and will be neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped as part of his adoption. He will require regular grooming every 6 weeks, which will involve time and expense for appointments.
Training & Support
Haywood is doing very well with his house manners and is crate trained, using his crate as a safe space. He sleeps through the night without issue and is not vocal when crated, except for occasional barking when someone enters the home. He is making great progress with potty training. He's still learning about leashes and can get a bit scared, pulling or running initially before relaxing. With more practice, he's expected to master this quickly. He enjoys cuddling once he's comfortable with you and is an easy-going companion. Haywood is not showing any issues with sharing treats or toys and takes treats gently.
