This sweet girl is trying so hard to embrace her new life! Grapefruit has been through a lot but still wants to love. She is approximately 4 years old and a Chihuahua mix, weighing about 12 pounds. She will be spayed, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped as part of her adoption. She is heartworm negative and on monthly preventions. Grapefruit takes some time to trust, but once she does, she's a clingy velcro dog who wants to be with you 24/7. She is learning to give people space and is more comfortable with women initially, but she will warm up to men with time and patience. Noises from outside and the TV can still startle her. She has done well with other dogs after she sees they are safe and has shown no prey drive towards indoor bunnies. We suspect she would do fine with cats. Grapefruit would likely do well with calmer older children who are respectful and give her space to adjust. She was terrified of leashes at first but is now walking well without pulling. A secure harness or collar is needed as she can still be startled and try to run. She does well on car rides and is learning to accept crate training with consistency. Grapefruit is still working on her house training, doing best with fewer scary sounds, so early mornings and late evenings are ideal for potty breaks. She had to fight for food in her past, so she eats separately to feel safe and secure. She is gentle when taking treats and does not show aggression over food, but she does eat very fast. Grapefruit currently has a low energy level but is expected to become more active as she gains confidence. She has a lot of potential and will make an excellent companion for someone willing to be patient and help her learn.
