Dexter is a one-year-old bundle of energy and a truly amazing dog, but he needs a very specific kind of home to truly shine. He was found abandoned and taken to the police station, and while he was a favorite there, he's had a rough start. Dexter is kennel trained and will let you know when he needs to go outside, but be prepared for his unique vocalizations! He "talks" a lot, which can sound intimidating, but there isn't a mean bone in his body. He thrives when he has something to chew on, especially when he's in his yard. While he's not aggressive, he can be nippy if he mistakes hands for toys, so a constant supply of chew toys is a must, as anything else will likely be destroyed. He absolutely loves beef bones and pig ears! Dexter is the kind of dog you'll want to spoil with matching outfits and movie nights on the couch. He loves his yard time and never challenges the fence. We do keep him from interacting with delivery people, and his gate is locked when he's outside, as we worry about people panicking and running, which could trigger his chase instinct.
Ideal Home
Dexter needs a home with a securely fenced yard, no exceptions. He would do best in a home without young children, as he hasn't been exposed to them and could potentially scare them or chew their toys. Due to his prey drive, he should not be in a home with cats. He is also a jumper, so he will need to be kenneled when guests are over.
Ongoing Health
Dexter is neutered, up-to-date on DAPP and rabies vaccines, microchipped, dewormed, and treated for fleas. His adoption fee is fully sponsored.
Training & Support
Dexter will need continued work on his jumping behavior. He also needs consistent redirection to appropriate chew toys to prevent nipping and destruction of his belongings. He does alert to potty needs, but his house-training status is not fully confirmed.
