About Dixie in TN (looking for a forever foster)

Dixie is a sweet 10-year-old black and tan Dachshund mix with a smooth coat, weighing about 16.5 lbs. She's looking for a very special forever foster home to live out her golden years in peace and quiet. Dixie came to us from Alabama after her owner passed away, and sadly, no family members could take her. There's a strong suspicion that she endured some abuse from her previous owner, who had dementia. Because of this past trauma, combined with her blindness, Dixie can be a bit defensive. She needs a patient and understanding foster parent who can recognize and accommodate her needs.

Dixie is a very low-maintenance girl who mostly enjoys sleeping the day away in her comfortable x-pen and bed. Her tail might wag a little when she knows it's mealtime, but otherwise, she's happy to snooze. She does enjoy gentle attention, like chin scratches and pets, and will come to you for them. If you're seeking a calm and quiet companion, Dixie could be the perfect fit for you.

Ideal Home

Dixie would thrive in a calm and quiet home. She needs to be the only dog in the household and cannot live with cats. Due to her blindness and past experiences, she should not live in a home with small children. An apartment is acceptable as long as it is on the ground floor, as she cannot navigate stairs or elevators. While a fenced yard isn't required, she will need to be leashed for all outdoor potty breaks and supervised until she returns inside.

Ongoing Health

Dixie is up to date on all her vaccinations. She was spayed before coming into rescue. She is blind, which is a condition to be aware of.

Training & Support

Dixie is house-trained and will use a doggy door or alert you when she needs to go out. She is also crate-trained and leash-trained. Her foster home can provide guidance on how to best support her unique needs.
