About Alani
Alani is a gorgeous 6 ½ year old Cocker Spaniel with a blond and white coat. She weighs around 22lbs and has adorable large white paws that seem almost too big for her slim body. A white stripe runs down her head to her nose, which is sprinkled with freckles. Alani came to us from a puppy mill where she spent her life as a breeding machine. She has made incredible progress since arriving in our care. Initially fearful of humans and other dogs, she now allows people to approach her quietly and is less wary of other dogs, though she is still cautious around lively ones. Alani has also shown to be fine with cats, calmly sniffing and mostly ignoring them. She has a curious nature and enjoys exploring her surroundings. While initially skittish, she now seeks out affection and has learned to navigate doors with confidence. Alani loves being outdoors and eagerly goes for long walks, enjoying the fresh air and the opportunity to sniff everything along the way. She walks well on a leash and is generally unfazed by cars, though loud trucks or motorcycles can startle her. Alani has discovered the joy of toys, particularly small squeaky ones, and has recently begun to engage in gentle play. She also enjoys basking in the sun and will often join in on yoga practice or relax nearby while you read. At night, she is fascinated by animal programs on television and settles contentedly on her dog bed. Alani has recently been exhibiting puppy-like behaviors, expressing delight and seeking out tummy rubs, showing a wonderful increase in her confidence. She is crate trained, sleeps soundly through the night, and remained calm during a recent thunderstorm. She is learning the "come" and "sit" commands, which will require reinforcement. Alani travels quietly in a crate in the vehicle, though she may be a bit anxious when initially placed in or taken out of it.
Ideal Home
Alani needs an adult-only home or one with gentle teens. She is still building confidence outside of her previous environment and would thrive in a quiet and calm home. She is a flight risk, so cautiousness around doors and always using a secure leash when not in a fully fenced, gap-free yard is essential. Alani is not suited for a noisy city environment, apartments with elevators, or condos/apartments that require navigating stairs to go outside. She needs easy access to the outdoors for consistency with house training. A fenced yard is a bonus but not a requirement. She thrives with human interaction and should not be left alone for long periods during the day.
Ongoing Health
Alani had an ear and eye issue that has been cleared up with medication. She has tartar build-up, and a dental recheck is recommended in a year, after she has had time to adjust to new food and chew toys, which is expected for a dog her age.
Training & Support
House training is an ongoing process for Alani, as is common with dogs from puppy mills. Consistency, supervision, regular potty breaks, praise, and crating when unsupervised are crucial. She needs to be taken out every 3 hours during the day to prevent accidents and will require a long morning walk to facilitate her needs. Her new family will need patience as she may experience some regression in a new environment. Reinforcement of "come" and "sit" commands will be needed.
