Inkling is an 8-month-old, approximately 80-pound Newfoundland with a spirit that shines! She's a little spark of hope, resilience, and possibility, who thankfully got a second chance at life thanks to the intervention of Healing Hearts Rescue and the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center. When she first arrived, her future looked uncertain due to what was believed to be a severe shoulder fracture. After extensive orthopedic surgery, Inkling quickly won everyone over with her sweet, gentle personality. Like many Newfoundlands, she is affectionate, kind-hearted, and happiest when surrounded by her loved ones, whether that's a canine companion or her human family. She adores other dogs and would thrive in a home with a furry friend to play and cuddle with. Inkling has never met a stranger and greets everyone with a wagging tail and a gentle disposition, doing wonderfully with both adults and children. She also has a great love for water, so be prepared for some enthusiastic splashing!
Ideal Home
Inkling would thrive in a home where she can be close to her family, ideally with another dog to keep her company.
Ongoing Health
Inkling is being adopted with several known pre-existing medical conditions that will require ongoing care and monitoring. She has Left Shoulder Orthopedic Disease, initially treated for a fracture but potentially an issue with osteochondritis dissecans (OCD). A screw remains in her humerus, and future surgery may be needed if it causes issues. She also developed Left Stifle (Knee) Disease after an infection, and while she's currently using the limb well, a future cruciate ligament injury and subsequent surgery is a possibility. Additionally, Inkling has Right Eye Entropion, a condition where her eyelid rolls inward, which will require surgical correction. Due to her complex orthopedic history and ongoing growth, future orthopedic monitoring by a veterinarian and potentially an orthopedic surgeon is strongly recommended. This may include additional diagnostics, rechecks, medications, rehabilitation, implant removal, and/or future surgeries.
Training & Support
Inkling is potty trained and crate trained, and generally good on a schedule. She is a young dog with a loving nature, and with continued positive reinforcement and guidance, she will continue to blossom. Her medical needs will require dedicated owners prepared for ongoing veterinary care.
