Professor Nikidik, affectionately known as Doc, is an 8-year-old, 5 lb Affenpinscher Mix with a spicy and confident personality. He came to us with an eye injury that led to glaucoma. After surgery to remove the affected eye, he also underwent neutering and a dental procedure where he lost most of his teeth. Doc is now back to his happy, energetic self, though he still has some quirks from his past experiences. He truly loves his people but can be a bit selective about who he trusts initially, sometimes requiring treats to warm up.
Ideal Home
Doc would do best in a home with a calm, steady, and predictable environment. Due to his dislike of being grabbed and his sensitive nature with his limited vision, he is not recommended for homes with small children. Our best estimate is that he would thrive with children aged 12 and older, but we are open to discussing individual circumstances. He also prefers to be the only pet in the home, as he tolerates other dogs but doesn't actively play with them and may become defensive if they get too close. He needs a home where someone is present for most of the day, as he craves constant companionship.
Ongoing Health
Doc has had his left eye surgically removed due to glaucoma. He has also been neutered and had a dental procedure resulting in the loss of most of his teeth. He is recovering well from these procedures.
Training & Support
Doc is working on his housebreaking and uses a belly band indoors as a precaution. While he is improving with going outside, he can sometimes have "accidents" if his cues are missed or if he isn't taken out promptly. He previously used pee pads and is still adjusting to going on grass, though he is getting better. He also needs to be supervised indoors to prevent accidents, as he was previously given too much freedom. Doc strongly dislikes crates and will protest with hours of whining and barking, so crate training is not recommended. He is food motivated and is making good progress on not begging or barking while humans are eating. He can be vocal and give a protective growl when someone approaches his person unexpectedly, but he has never bitten. With his limited vision, he startles easily and may react defensively. He will need a patient adopter experienced with shy dogs who can help him feel safe and loved.
